DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES CRIMINAL PROCESS
Downtown Los Angeles is patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department. A large majority of arrests are made by LAPD with a smaller amount being made by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or the California Highway Patrol.
All misdemeanor cases are prosecuted by the Los Angeles City Attorney. Misdemeanor filings are arraigned at “Bauchet Court” or the Central Arraignment Court. There are 4 courts at Bauchet. Once a misdemeanor case is arrainged (where charges are announced and a person enters a preliminary plea of either no contest, guilty or not guilty) the case is sent to Department 40 of the Criminal Courts Building where all pretrial motions are heard and discovery is completed. If a case is set for trial, it will likely be sent out for a trial court in CCB as well.
Downtown Felony cases are all arraigned in Department 30 of the Criminal Courts Building. Once arrainged, the case is sent out for “Early Disposition Court” or “EDP” in Department 50, or is sent to one of many “Preliminary Hearing Courts” courts whose sole purpose is to do preliminary hearings. FOR MORE ON PRELIMINARY HEARINGS AND THE FELONY CRIMINAL PROCESS IN GENERAL CLICK HERE. After preliminary hearing, the case is sent to another court for all post-prelim pretrial matters and if set for trial, is sent out to another court in CCB for trial.
